The production process starts by taking the sea water to the pools via pumps in March-April depending on the weather conditions. The density of the sea water increases when evaporated. It’s transferred to the upper stage pools and then to the crystallization pools. Since the sea water which goes on to evaporate in crystallization pools reaches to the saturation point, first crystals of salt starts to precipitate on the floor of the crystallization pool. The cycle of taking sea water with pumps and precipitating salt in the crystallization pools goes on until September and from that period the salt production is meant to be completed and harvest period starts. Salt layers accumulated on the floors of crystallization pools are harvested by special high technology salt harvesters and sale is carried out 365 days of the year.
As a result of the evaporation of sea water, pink and red colors appear in the middle of large white and blue colors of the delta. The color of the water which turns into pink in the pools, turn into red in the crystallization pools. Halophilic bacterias who can survive in high salinity provide these colors to the sea water. These beneficial creatures increase the salt production by consuming organic materials and clearing the water.
There are Brine Shrimps (Artemia Salina) in the pools of Çamaltı Saltworks as well as the salt produced. This crustacea which is the key organism for the biological balance in the saltworks feeds by filtering the water. Thus, it makes the sea water clean and clear. This creature is also the source of food for the flamingos which are the symbol of the saltworks.
Çamaltı Saltworks has fed both the humans and all other creatures with sea salt for thousands of years with its different but coherent values.
